Biography

Welcome to Thirteen Stars Baseball! My name is Casey Martinez, and I’m thrilled to share my journey and passion for baseball with you. Growing up immersed in the world of baseball, I developed a deep love for the game, especially for the art and science of catching.

Baseball has always been a cornerstone of my life. My father, Buck Martinez, played 17 years in Major League Baseball, and his career has profoundly influenced my understanding of the game. From a young age, I was fortunate to absorb his insights, philosophy, and knowledge, particularly about the catching position. His guidance and mentorship have shaped my approach to baseball and instilled in me a deep respect for the game’s nuances and demands.

My playing career took off at the collegiate level, where I had the privilege of playing for two distinguished Division 1 programs: Virginia Tech and Sacramento State. Balancing the rigors of academics and athletics, I graduated with honors in four years, demonstrating my commitment both on and off the field. In 2000, my dedication and hard work culminated in being drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays, marking the beginning of an exhilarating professional journey.

During my professional career, I played at every level of Minor League Baseball—Rookie, Short-Season A, Low A, High A, AA, and AAA. Each step of the way, I honed my skills, deepened my understanding of the game, and gained invaluable experience. The challenges and triumphs of my playing days have provided me with a comprehensive perspective on what it takes to excel in baseball.

After concluding my playing career, I transitioned into the world of sports management, working in Major League Soccer and with the New York Mets. These roles offered me a unique vantage point, broadening my appreciation for the organizational and strategic aspects of sports. Eventually, life led me to a new path, and since 2005, I have been working in corporate governance and executive compensation, armed with an MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Despite my career shift, my passion for baseball never waned. I found ways to “scratch the itch” by playing in adult leagues and offering coaching tips to local players.

My wonderful wife, Jennifer, and I are raising three beautiful daughters. Watching them compete in gymnastics, lacrosse, field hockey, swimming, and track and field has reignited my desire to help young athletes pursue their athletic dreams.

This rekindled passion and the enduring influence of my father’s legacy inspired me to start Thirteen Stars Baseball. The name “Thirteen Stars” holds a special significance, paying homage to my father (his jersey number was 13), and honoring my home state of Vermont, where Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys fought for freedom carrying a battle flag with 13 stars.
